On her last day in Takarazuka, a whole bunch of the others are waiting for her inside at irimachi, practically ambushing her when she enters. Of course Shio-san is at the forefront of the group, too. Holding something cream-coloured and fluffy-looking between her hands – not a puppy dog, but something much better! Miu smiles despite the sadness of it all and holds out her hands in expectation.

The scarf is even softer than it looks, but Shio-san reclaims it quickly. To wrap it around Miu’s neck herself. They stand like that for a long moment. Until Miu bows. In thanks.

Everyone!

Today I discovered something incredible! It’s a lipstick from MAC, pink and shimmering and really cute! Everyone should definitely buy it; it’s called Sheen Supreme Behave Yourself. Those who know me also know that I don’t wear a lot of jewellery day to day, right? Only earrings and sometimes necklaces…

Well, that’s because Miu-chan thinks a girl’s best accessory is her smile and the best way to make it really sparkle and shine is by using the right lipstick! Mmn, a good smile is better than jewellery, especially if it reflects a warm heart.

Hane is released while Yu is in the middle of her toughest preparations for TMS. She learns about the CD from a late-night show on TV, KOTOKO performing the title song after doing just a short interview. It’s not the kind of music Yu would normally listen to, but KOTOKO’s voice – combined with knowing that she, like Yu herself, is from Sapporo and has lived out her dream… It’s admirable, right? While hitting close to home at the same time.

Later, when Yu packs her bags to move to Takarazuka, Hane is stacked with the rest of her dance music.

The bathrooms at Lily Lily’s are completely deserted, it’s that late… That early, because it’s five in the morning now, isn’t it? The club is closing and Miu needs to make her decision soon. Whether she wants to hook up with attractive Nao-san whose kanji means honest and who’s tall and has short hair, just like an otokoyaku. “Miu,” Nao-san whispers in her soft voice, hands soft too. “It’s an unusual name for a Japanese person.” Miu just laughs and leans in to kiss her, with lots of tongue.

Sorry, she thinks – but I can’t be as honest as you.

The head of EGO-kun’s fanclub kindly allows Miu to attend her classmate’s first ochakai, even promises to keep it a secret from EGO-kun herself. On the day, at the event, when it’s time for questions – Miu stands up and asks the most important one of all:

“Fuji Eru-san, isn’t it true that you’ll definitely be top star one day?”

As soon as she’s been identified by everyone present – pointed out to some – everybody claps their hands and laughs. Their friendly cheering reflects on both their faces, EGO-kun’s and Miu’s. Mmn, seeing the surprise in her friend’s eyes… That’s the prize.

They’re eating their dinner in silence, Yu and Yu’s mother. A western-style meal, the leftovers from Yu’s mother’s meeting with two American businessmen, here in their private home… In her mind, Yu imagines her mother asking her something like “your line dance practice – are you working hard on it?” or “have you made your decision in regards to your stage name at last?” Her mother, however, only opens her mouth around the next bite of steak. But it’s okay. Yu knows. Yu knows that her mother loves her in a different currency and Takarazuka has been nothing, if not expensive.

“So, the reason that you’re retiring is that your girlfriend… died in a car accident on Brushstrokes shonichi?”

It’s difficult to tell what word Chiho-chan is placing the most emphasis on. Whether it’s on “girlfriend” or “died”. Miu just nods her head and takes another sip from her diet coke. She’s already decided that it doesn’t really matter what her friend thinks, however cold that kind of philosophy is. They’re nearing the end of the Tokyo run of Elisabeth anyway, right?

“I see,” Chiho-chan says, her tone of voice making Miu smile. “You must have loved her very much, Miu-chan.”

While everyone prepares for the stage, backstage is a blur. Of excitement, the kind mostly born from nerves strung too tight. Jittery, Miu’s applying her makeup – in 9 minutes, Hanagumi record holder! – with her cell phone lying in front of her. On silent mode. She texted Tomomin earlier; asked her how her day has been…

Around her, Sakura no Hime’s entourage is beginning to shuffle towards the wings. Miu gets up, too. Quickly. Leaves her cell phone on the dressing table. Turned off, as is expected.

So the text message only ticks in later. After everything. Yu-chan, do your best!

Cute little Aoi-chan brings her mother a flower that she’s found growing stubbornly in one of the cracks in the playground asphalt and Dai-chan laughs upon receiving it, saying “thank you very much” in her politest voice and kissing the top of her daughter’s head. It’s rare for Dai-chan to laugh, being generally a very serious person, but at the times when she does, it’s most often around Aoi-chan. Miu observes the scene playing out before her like the best Takarazuka musical – except, in Takarazuka Dai-chan would have played an entirely different role and it’s difficult imagining her happier in any other than the one she’s performing right now, crouching down to correct the arrangement of the pleats in Aoi-chan’s skirt. The role of a mother. Not generally the role of an otokoyaku, but Dai-chan isn’t an otokoyaku anymore. She’s an Old Girl. And a dancer, perhaps despite her age.
